What those Cubans eat?
Before we got to the biggest Caribbean island, our imagination of the Cuban cuisine looked like this: tons of fishes, seafood, exotic fruits, rum and cigars…ops, sorry, the last two things probably don’t belong to the kitchen… actually some rum can do magical things over there 🙂 .
So what those Cubans eat? After first few days in Cuba we found out, that they don’t eat too much fishes or seafood. “Seafood is mainly for the tourists and fishes go to the hospitals for sick people or to the schools for children. And of course to the hotels as well,” locals said.
In ordinary Cuban households they prepare a lot of meals from the chicken or pork meat. In a case that you will get an invitation for lunch to the Cuban house one day, be ready for this: fresh fruit salad made out of grapefruits, oranges, mandarins, pineapples or papaya as an appetizer, then thick Cuban soup called Frijoles Negros and as a main dish pork or chicken meat with rice and tiny black beans plus roasted bananas. Yummy! Oh, we love those bananas and rice! Damn, we are getting so hungry!
And what about the dessert? Maybe they would give you candied papaya with some pastry, pineapple pie or a caramel cream. And of course after the lunch it’s time for a drink. Would you like to have some Mojito or you prefer a dark Cuba Libre? 🙂
Cubans also love sandwiches. And what do they like to put inside? So for example baked pork meat, slices of ham, Swiss cheese, cucumbers and yellow mustard. But the most popular sandwich is called “Elena Ruz” and it’s made out of Cuban bread, layer of curd on one side, strawberry jam on the other side and a few pieces of turkey breasts between them. Not bad, who wants a bite?
And what “Cuban” did we prepare for you? Two simple and tasty recipes, which you can make for yourself anytime.
Ensalada de Aguacate Y Piňa (Avocado & Pineapple Salad)
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
- 2 cups of pineapple chunks
- 1 large avocado, peeled and cut in slices (editor note: please rather use 2 avocados, because in a countries like Cuba a big avocado means HUGE 🙂 )
- 1 small onion, sliced thin
- Olive oil (to taste)
- Red wine or cider vinegar (to taste)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
Steps: Mix the following ingredients for a simple Cuban-style salad. Serve chilled!
Arroza la Cubana (Rice smothered with tomato sauce, plantains and a fried egg)
- Rice 1 ½ cups (300g)
- Oil (to taste)
- Water 3 cups (twice amount of rice)
- Tomato sauce 2 cups (4-5dl)
- Bananas 4 pcs (ripe but firm)
- Eggs 4 pcs
- Onion 1 pc (small)
- Basil -dried 1tsp
- Sugar (to taste)
- Salt (to taste)
- Butter (to tatse)
Steps: Wash the rice and pour a few tablespoons of the oil on it. Stir during frying in a pot. Add water and boil it until the water evaporates (rice is done). In a second pot boil tomato sauce with chopped onion, a teaspoon of dried basil, sugar and a little bit of salt. Melt the butter in a frying pan and fry slices of bananas (peel and slice lengthwise) on both sides until they are golden and lightly crisp. Finally prepare a fried eggs. Serve it on a plate, pour the tomato sauce over the rice and add the fried eggs and bananas.
