“Pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers in a shell. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. Because of this, pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.”
This is more or less definition of a pearl, if you ask smart “internetpedia” and also the reason, why they are so wanted. People started to look for the way, how they can create them by themselves. And in a little Spanish town called Manacor they found out how. Their artificial pearls are so perfect that now others are trying to fake it. Mallorca pearls are the number one souvenir from the island and they are all around. Just choose wisely, so you won’t pay for the fake of the fake pearls 🙂 .
As a travelers, we don’t like to stay at the same place or in a resort all the time. We love to go around and see what’s up. In Mallorca, we found many pearls. Pearls of architecture, pearls of nature and also pearls on a plate.
Palma de Mallorca, the capital city, is definitely a pearl of architecture. We were wondering, why it reminds us Barcelona so much and then the answer popped up. Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí left his touch in both cities. Not only in Barcelona, but also in Palma is pretty obvious. He also completed a construction of the Palma cathedral “La Seu”, which is the most famous monument of Balears.
Mallorca is the island for everyone. If you call yourself “a party animal”, then the “El Arenal” area (close to the Palma) is made just for you. You can find there all the best disco clubs, bars and restaurants. Families with kids should rather go to Port de Soller, gorgeous little port on the northwest part of the island. All “picture hunters” can’t miss Port De Sa Calobra and Cap Formentor with amazing overlooks and landscape. Are you a water sports freak?Port de Pollença has its arms wide open for you. By the way, we found kiteboarding paradise in this area, if you are interested 🙂 .
What more to say about Mallorca? Maybe you care (maybe you don’t), but you can find many celebrity homes around the island. Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones or Spanish royal family have their houses in Mallorca. And of course Rafael Nadal, one of the best tennis player ever, since he was born in Mallorca and his family still lives there. By the way, he was born in Manacor, the city of Mallorca pearls, which we mentioned at the beginning.
So if you are hungry (and thirsty) after all that traveling, get a pitcher of refreshing Spanish sangria, tasty soup called Gazpacho and a plate full of Paella (yummy rice with seafood) for yourself. Great restaurants are all around the island. We usually prefer smaller ones, where you feel like home. The food is generally delicious and made with lots of love 🙂 .
